“Our care of the child should be governed, not by the desire to make him learn things, but by the endeavor always to keep burning within him that light which is called intelligence.”
Dr. Maria Montessori

Lower Elementary: Ages 6-9
Expanding Curiosity and Imagination
As children move into the 6–9 environment, their world begins to expand. They are no longer satisfied with simply knowing what something is—they want to understand why and how. This stage is marked by growing imagination, reasoning, and a strong sense of fairness.

The curriculum becomes more interconnected, with students exploring big ideas through storytelling, research, and collaborative learning. With greater independence, students begin to take more ownership of their time, practicing planning, goal-setting, and follow-through in their daily work.

Social development deepens during these years. Students strengthen their communication skills as they share ideas, ask questions, and work alongside peers. They continue building empathy while also learning more structured approaches to conflict resolution. Navigating friendships with increasing awareness and care becomes an intentional focus. Self-awareness begins to take shape as students reflect on their choices, recognize their strengths, and understand how their actions affect others.

This phase is essential because it nurtures both intellectual curiosity and personal growth. Children develop the confidence to think independently while learning how to collaborate, communicate, and contribute meaningfully within a group.
